Ask Rev. Dagmar

Dear Rev. Dagmar

I’m ninety years old and probably much too wordy, but I don’t know why it has always been believed that being poor is more god-like. Why must we believe that Jesus was a member of the “peasant class”, the son of a poor, uneducated carpenter? His mother, Mary, was cousin to Elizabeth, the wife of Zechariah, who was a member of the Abijah division of the Temple servers,
certainly not from the peasant class. Was he educated? He knew the prophets; he read aloud and wrote in the dirt. I’m ninety years old, but there’s a crying hunger in me for my fellowmen to realize what a lovely person Jesus was. Certainly there’s nothing wrong with peasants, but part of Jesus’ astounding life that is completely overlooked is that he gave up a life of ease and comfort, as well as his life itself, for us.

Dear Rev. Dagmar

Please tell me if you think that God forgives people who commit suicide. My son was very depressed and took his life when he was thirty-two. He had been desperately trying to find God and had joined an Ashram hoping to become a monk. It was a shattering experience, but I cannot believe that a merciful God would punish him throughout eternity.

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. This happened many years ago, but he is in my thoughts and prayers daily.
